Problem

Due to a long product history and a heterogeneous customer structure with individual needs, our partner, the Knorr-Bremse Systeme für Schienenfahrzeuge GmbH, possesses a very large variant portfolio in the concerning product group. Challenges are managing the existing variant diversity and controlling the steadily increasing number of variants.

Goal

Aim of the project is a strategy to fulfill the individual customer wishes while handling the emerging complexity in the future. Thereby, a product, as well as a system strategy which contain both technical and market-related influencing factors are to be developed.

Approach

At first the existing variants of certain subsystems are analyzed concerning their function and control relations. Therefore, the methods of structural complexity management are used. Based on these relations and furthermore identified market parameters a multi-dimensional portfolio is developed, enabling the derivation of a product and system strategy and a successful implementation.
