Tools
Tools support the development of a product. A systematic application of the proper tools guarantees an efficient and effective approach. This is the case with such tools as model construction kits or test stands and computer based tools, ranging from spreadsheets to virtual reality environments, which form an essential part of modern development processes.
Numerous methods can only be properly applied by using the right tools. The handling of large matrices, e.g. in Quality Function Deployment (QFD) is facilitated immensely by the use of the proper software tools. On the other hand, to fully utilize complex tools such as CAD systems, methods have to be developed and adapted. The introduction of tools into companies often affects various processes, which then have to be customized accordingly.
In addition to analysis and further development of existing tools, new tools are being developed at our department as well. An example for this is the 3-D sketcher, which combines the advantages of intuitive sketching on paper and 3-D software by allowing the user to make three dimensional sketches. With the help of virtual reality the sketches can be perceived spatially and observed from any visual angle, without having to make perspective 2D-drawings.
